4 month paid internship August-November 2017

Background:

Our aim is to give a young academic or professional with a study or research background on Food and Nutrition Security the opportunity to look at policy and practice gaps as well as innovative approaches to address these issues in the field.

Job purpose:

The objective is to support two specific pieces of research and to support and contribute to the drafting of two position/technical papers.

Main duties & Responsibilities

1) Contextual analysis – EU Action Plan on Nutrition (60%)

This aspect of the intern’s work will be undertaken in close cooperation with the members of the Advocacy Group and entails producing:

• A comprehensive, clear and succinct contextual analysis on EC and EU members’ commitments and actual support to achieving the EU Action Plan on Nutrition. This will also entail an analysis of the different position of potential allies to the plan but also of the obstacles for its full implementation.
• The documentation of actual trends in commitments, gaps between objectives and commitments and, coherence between commitments and country level action plans.
• The documentation, in a user-friendly format, of the key features of country action plans and trends & gaps for achieving the overall nutrition objectives.
• Identification of the various global events and initiatives that could constitute a potential opportunity for Alliance2015 to promote their messages and position its work over the next 1-3 years

2) F&NS with the Private Sector (30%)

This aspect of the Intern’s assignment will be undertaken in close cooperation with the members of the Food and Nutrition Security Group and entails producing:

• a comprehensive literature review of private and public actors’ main approaches and lessons learnt from their Private Sector engagement and cooperation to address Food and Nutrition Security of the poor.
• Support to Alliance2015 Food and Nutrition Security Group for the finalisation of the Alliance Food and Nutrition Security and the Private Sector technical paper

3) Coordination and communication (10%)

• The intern will work with the communications officer to format and present products in an engaging and appropriately branded style, and to produce a PowerPoint/set of talking points which senior staff can use.
• Any other relevant task as reasonably requested by SPO.

Person specifications:

Essential:

• Research/study background and true interest in policy and practice relating to Food and Nutrition Security.
• Interest and understanding of development policies and their impact on people who are very poor.
• Interest and basic understanding of EU/ECs development mechanisms (regarding financing and follow-up of action plans).
• Educated to degree level in social sciences, e.g. international relations, development studies.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with people from different cultural and technical background and working in many different locations.
• Fluent in oral and written English.

Desirable:

• Ability to present complex issues in a simple and engaging language.
• Understanding of, familiarity with, EU policies about food and nutrition security
